Import troubleshooting for Spotify and Apple Music

If your import is failing or your files are not being accepted, follow the steps below in order. Most import issues are caused by one of these: the wrong account is connected, the files were changed, the files were already used on another account, or the uploader is struggling with a large ZIP file.

Before you import

To import your listening history:

  1. You must have an active stats.fm Plus subscription.

  2. You must be connected to the matching service inside stats.fm before importing:

    • Spotify for Spotify files
    • Apple Music for Apple Music files (with an active subscription)

    You can check this by going to Settings > Connections on your mobile app.

  3. Your files must be original and untouched:

    • do not rename them
    • do not edit them
    • do not move or change their contents
    • do not reuse files that were already imported on another stats.fm account

If everything above is correct and your import still fails, try the options below.

If import fails, try this

Option 1: Import via web instead of the app

If importing in the mobile app does not work, try importing on the web instead.

Go to stats.fm/import, log in to the same stats.fm account, and upload your files there.

Option 2: Upload files individually instead of ZIP

ZIP imports should work, but in some cases they may fail, especially when the dataset is large.

If that happens:

  • extract or unzip the downloaded archive
  • locate the original files inside
  • upload the import files one by one instead of uploading the full ZIP at once

This is especially worth trying if the upload stalls, fails immediately, or never finishes processing. You can learn how to extract .ZIP files on this page.

Important file rules

Make sure your files meet all of these requirements:

  • They must come directly from Spotify or Apple
  • You must select the right types of files:
    • Spotify: ZIP or JSON (if you unzip the dowloaded archive)
    • Apple Music: ZIP or CSV (if you unzip the dowloaded archive)
  • Select no more than one ZIP file in one selection
  • Do not combine ZIP + other files in the same selection
  • Files must not be renamed, edited or modified in any way
  • They must not have been used on a different stats.fm account before

If any of the above is not true, the import may fail or be rejected.

Last steps if nothing works

If the import still does not work:

  1. Request a new copy of your data from Spotify or Apple Music
  2. Download the new files
  3. Try the import again from scratch
  4. First try on the web
  5. If needed, unzip the files and upload them one by one

  • the file you selected
  • what happens after you press upload
  • the error message, if one appears
